CHS Planning Major Cat Hoarding Rescue and Adoption “Catapalooza” Event

The Coastal Humane Society of Brunswick is planning a large rescue beginning Sunday, September 8 to extract more than 60 cats from a hoarding situation in the area.

CHS has rescued over 50 cats from this hoarding situation already in the past month with the full cooperation of the owner. The cats are reproducing at a fast rate – so CHS has decided to accept all of the cats at once, despite the strain it will present on the already full shelter and its resources.

To carry out the rescue, CHS will transform what is currently being used as their administrative offices at 190 Pleasant Street into a temporary shelter, with veterinary equipment, cages, food, linen, and everything the cats will need. The shelter will rent out the Community Spay/Neuter Clinic in Freeport to perform high volume spays/neuters.

“We hope the public will be very involved in this rescue. We’ll need a lot of support for these cats, including donations of supplies such as large cages, dry and wet food, kitten food, and cat carriers,” said Karen Stimpson, Executive Director.  “Each cat will likely cost us about $500.  We also need substantial volunteer support for daily care for these animals, who will be led by our veterinarian Dr. Mandie Wehr, CHS staff, and the Cumberland County Animal Response Team.   However, the most important thing we can ask for – the most important thing – adopters. These cats are friendly, healthy, well-socialized, and they need homes now. They will be so happy to live in a home that isn’t crowded with cats!”

The week long rescue operation will finish with an adoption blowout event at 190 Pleasant Street.  On Saturday, September 14 and Sunday, September 15, from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m., CHS will host a CATAPALOOZA adoption event in effort to place all cats into homes.  Kittens 6 months or younger will be $109, and kittens 6 months to 1 year will be $85. All cats 1 year and older will be fee-waived.

The weekend of September 7 – 8, CHS will be waiving the adoption fees for in-house shelter cats one year or older in effort to make room for the influx of Coastal residents.  Select dogs will also be adoptable for $99 for two days only and will be adoptable with a coupon for free obedience classes. Rabbits will be fee-waived.

Everyone is invited to visit, observe, and join the rescue effort. The full schedule of the rescue, which begins Saturday, September 7, can be found below, along with a complete list of supplies needed and a donation page.  Supplies can be delivered to 190 Pleasant Street.  People are also invited to follow the rescue on the shelter’s Facebook page.

The Coastal Humane Society is a nonprofit charitable corporation founded in 1950, dedicated to preventing cruelty to animals and providing care and protection for the area’s stray, abandoned and abused animals. CHS receives no federal or state funds, and receives local funds only through animal control fee-for-service contracts with 14 towns along Maine’s mid coast. All other funding for CHS must be raised through donations. CHS assists more than 2,500 animals each year.
