"When we least expect kindness and generosity, both can walk through our doors in the form of young people." Sandy, CHS Staff Member It is heartening for us at CHS to see the dedication so many of the young people in our community have for animals in need. We want to show you some of the imaginative things these young people are doing to help, let you meet these young folks, and also say a public "Thank-you!" to them. They offer helping hands today and a bright light into tomorrow! |

Duncan HOPPS! Nine-year-old Duncan is an artist with a kind heart. When his HOPP (Helping Other People, Plants, and Pets) Club at school requested food donations from its members, Duncan decided to use his innate talent as a club member. This young man loves to draw characters - mostly from comic books, he says. When the opportunity arose to contribute, Duncan used his ingenuity to raise funds for our work here at the shelter. This young man e-mailed his relatives offering to sketch portraits of family pets for $5 each. Relatives responded with photos of their loved little ones. Duncan sketched, drew, colored, and matted lovely finished pet portraits. Through all of this, Duncan had our residents in mind as his beneficiaries. We met Duncan on August 13 as he entered our shelter lobby with the $75 he had raised. Duncan tells us his mom is an artist; his brother is an artist. We suspect that not only is Duncan an artist, he is also an altruistic humanitarian. We asked Duncan if he would e-mail some of his artwork to us. We are proud to showcase his talent on this website. Thank you, Duncan, from all of the animals in our care. Your donation will be used to make their lives more comfortable here at the shelter while they are with us.

Need a babysitter? How about three babysitters? How about three babysitters for stuffed animals? Sounds like a neat idea! We thought so when we met Mary and Kelly. These fifth grade students together with their friend Kimmy are an ingenious group. They are the Pennies for Pets Girls! Read what they wrote for us: Pennies for Pets This past year in our fifth grade we decided that we wanted to help animals in some way but did not know how. One day we realized that we always were bringing our stuffed animals to school and came up with the idea for a stuffed animal babysitting business. Then we decided if we charged a penny a day per animal then with the time left in the school year, we might be able to raise a lot of money. Then our next dilemma was how to use the money we raised. We all agreed on Coastal Humane Society because if we donated the money there, then this would help many animals which is what we all wanted to do. Once we got started we all took turns babysitting different animals from different people during recess and for animal sleepovers. One classmate even had us baby sit two animals during a thirty-day period day and night. By the end of the school year, we had raised twenty-seven dollars from babysitting and donations from teachers, parents, and friends. Signed, Mary, Kimmy, and Kelly We were so impressed with their letter, we decided to share it as they sent it to us. Unfortunately, Kimmy could not be with her friends on the day of our “photo shoot” but Mary and Kelly want to be sure she receives the credit she deserves for being a member of the Pennies for Pets Girls. Thank you to all three of these entrepreneurs for thinking of us and the animals in our care with such a clever fundraising idea. |
Seven-year-Old Sadie The Sagacious Humanitarian Meet Sadie. Once you do, she is not easily forgotten. Sadie wanted to help the animals in our care and told her Mom she wanted to run a pet supply drive at the Harpswell Town Office. She initiated and took charge of the task on her own delegating to Mom the things she needed help with. They designed flyers and made the box you see here. Sadie chose the graphics for the sign and imported them into the text mom had prepared. We thought the box was too clever not to show to everyone. Isn't it great? The collecton box was available to the public for the months of June and July. Sadie says she could tell what we needed most by logging on to our website and checking our Wish List. She is one smart girl! She presented us with a yellow sheet she titled "Pet Supply Drive Inventory" written in her own hand. How impressive is that? As we were chatting, we needed to know more about this precious treasure standing before us. Sadie tells us her brother has a pet snake and frog. She has a rabbit... but "We need to take more responsibility before we can have a dog." Doesn't that make you fall in love with her parents? What a great family! I noticed the gap in her front teeth and she volunteered that her brother had pulled her tooth for her explaining the full procedure to us. I could have listened to this cherub for an hour.
The sincerity of this young girl is testament to the wonder the difference one little girl can make in the lives of homeless animals. Sadie, you are our angel. |
Can there be two little girls with more humility and panache than Gabriella and Alexis? We think not. For two days these sisters collected bottles in their neighborhood. They designed and posted a sign. They went from house to house - a total of 80 houses! On August 9 they presented us with the $60.15 they had collected. How did these sweethearts know we were in need? They have our website in their Favorites folder and check out our available pets every day. Now it is time for them to see themselves showcased for their good work on our website. Gabriella and Alexis have two dogs of their own - Wally and Maya - as well as their cat Mau. We suspect these three gets lots of loving and attention from their owners. Thank you to these two animal-loving angels for thinking of our residents. |
