Junior Volunteers

"When we least expect kindness and generosity, both can walk through our doors in the form of young people." Sandy, CHS Staff Member It is heartening for us at CHS to see the dedication so many of the young people in our community have for animals in need. We want to show you some of the imaginative things these young people are doing to help, let you meet these young folks, and also say a public "Thank-you!" to them. They offer helping hands today and a bright light into tomorrow! |
Please meet our junior volunteers ...

Picture this. A rainy Friday afternoon. An animal shelter abuzz with visitors. Preparations for a plant sale to begin the next day consuming our day. Animals to adopt to the right families. Cats and dogs needing attention and feeding. In through our doors walk three little angels with their mom. Twins Anna and Julia had just celebrated their eighth birthday with about a dozen of their friends. Rather than think of themselves on their special day, they had the foresight to think of others. They had chosen us. With mom Mary and little sister Lily, these girls came in with bag upon bag as well as boxes full of cleaning supplies, paper goods, dog and cat food, dishes, towels, blankets, and toys. All these items had been birthday gifts from their guests. Rather than ask for presents for themselves, these cherubs asked their guests to contribute to the needs of our shelter animals. Anna and Julia have always had an affinity for animals; they have three bunnies and two cats at home right now. These second grade students know the true meaning of generosity. We look forward to that day when they will be old enough to volunteer within the shelter. Thank you, Anna and Julia. |
Girl Scout Troop 2291 Rocks! Three representatives of this group with their troop leader came to our shelter Friday afternoon with unique hand-designed cat toys, homemade dog treats, cleaning suplies, garbage bags, and miscellaneous items we sorely needed. The girls had even "dog tested" the treats they had baked on their own dogs who loved them. Our canine residents enjoyed an afternoon treat that day and scarfed them up with gusto.
Natalie, Jasmine, and Kristen represented their fellow troop members
very well.
When interviewed, the girls stated they chose our shelter as their cause
for three reasons: Their troop leader offered these representatives the opportunity to speak for themselves and answer questions regarding their project. They did so very well. Thank you, Troop 2291! Thank you Natalie, Jasmine, and Kristen for visiting with us. Thank you, Troop Leader Ann for guiding them so well. The town of Brunswick is fortunate to have such caring citizens in its midst. |
She is an eighth grade student at Mt. Ararat Middle School. She had a smile that brightened our day. She arrived with her mom on the Saturday before Mother's Day. She met with our volunteer coordinator and filled out the proper forms. Then she presented us with over $60 she had raised. What were we to say? Her name is Ricki. She and her friend Savannah in a span of three weeks mowed lawns and collected bottles and cans. With those earnings in hand, they thought of the Coastal Humane Society. Ricki hopes to be a veterinarian some day. She regularly watches "Animal Rescue" on TV and empathizes with the plight of animals in unfortunate circumstances. Ricki and her mom are coming back to our shelter in a few days. They're new volunteers. We are the better for having met them and look forward to having them by our side. |
Two lovely and lively young ladies visited Coastal Humane on Tuesday afternoon May 22. Luisa and Emma had viewed our website and particularly the link to our Wish List. These sweethearts brought us scads of blankets and towels. When speaking with these junior volunteers, we were impressed with the initiative they had taken to make life better here for our feline and canine residents. Luisa and Emma had found a Girls Club book at Bookland focusing on community service ideas. These fifth grade students then designed posters for their school and prepared a collection box asking for donations for our shelter. They wrote an ad for their school newsletter published the week before their visit to us. They even enlisted adult support with e-mails going to the faculty of their school as well as to staff at Bowdoin College. Luisa and Emma exemplify the vitality and sincerity of their generation. We thank them for thinking of us and acting in such an altruistic manner. We look forward to working with both these girls when they are old enough to volunteer within the shelter. |
