"When we least expect kindness and generosity, both can walk through our doors in the form of young people." Sandy, CHS Staff Member It is heartening for us at CHS to see the dedication so many of the young people in our community have for animals in need. We want to show you some of the imaginative things these young people are doing to help, let you meet these young folks, and also say a public "Thank-you!" to them. They offer helping hands today and a bright light into tomorrow! |
Please meet Junior Volunteer Pearl an innovative young lady who baked, sold and inspired - all to help the animals of CHS. We have a feline available for adoption named Pearl. She's on our website. Check her out. Before you do that, check out our newest Pearl! This lovely third grade student from the Fisher Mitchell School in Bath came to visit our Pearl this last Saturday bringing with her a generous monetary donation to the Coastal Humane Society. Junior Volunteer Pearl baked brownies, made lemonade, and sold them on the street outside her house. She also brought to her classmates an empty jar hoping they would help her fill it on our behalf... and they did! This sweetheart of a young lady brightened our day and warmed our souls with her kindness. Pearl will be a wonderful asset to our volunteer program when she is older. Both our Pearls are precious gems! Thank You Pearl! |
Please meet more of our junior volunteers ...

Katrina is a young teen who wanted to do something to help the shelter. Katrina hosted a sledding birthday party. She asked for donations for the Coastal Humane Society as birthday gifts. Thirty-two friends attended her afternoon celebration all bringing gifts. As a result, we received monetary donations, gift cards, pet food, cleaning supplies, and toys at a value of $300! On Friday, February 9 Katrina came to our shelter with her family to present her gifts. It is heartening to all of us here to meet young people like Katrina. There are wonderful young people in the communities the Coastal Humane Society services and Katrina exemplifies the altruistic attitude of her generation. The canine and feline residents of Coastal Humane Society thank you, Katrina. We are honored that you have chosen us as the recipient of your birthday gifts. |
When we least expect kindness and generosity, both can walk through our doors in the form of young people. Fourth grade student Hannah and second grader Sarah entered the Coastal Humane Society shelter on a sunny Saturday afternoon with their parents and presented us with money they had collected by walking ten miles and five miles respectively. These sisters chose to donate the money they had earned to the needy animals in our care. We were awed by the sincerity and humility with which these girls offered their collective $31.60 to us. They had adopted a cat from us in the past and wanted to do a kindness for those animals still in need of homes. Coastal Humane Society publicly thanks these young girls and their parents for thinking of us. |
Three young boys entered our shelter on Monday, April 9 with a sizable donation to help with the care of our resident animals. We were impressed not only with the generous monetary amount they offered but also with the enthusiasm and manner in which they chose to support our work. These sixth grade friends spent an hour and twenty minutes with their guitars and fiddles serenading passers-by on the streets of Freeport! With an open guitar case in front of them, they asked for nothing yet found goodness in the people who stopped by. We continue to be heartened by the young volunteers who take the initiative to help us with our work. Cal, Connor, and Juan live in different towns but attend the same school. It is a credit to their parents and to the Merriconeag Waldorf School they attend that these boys thought of Coastal Humane Society as the charity they wish to support. Cal, Connor, and Juan - thank you for your kindness, your initiative, and your support. You are fine young men and we appreciate you. |
Our volunteer coordinator received a phone call from a family with a daughter who wanted to volunteer at our shelter. Our coordinator told this family that even though this young girl did not meet the age requirements to volunteer within the shelter building, there are many other ways she could help volunteer. In that discussion many options were offered and she could pick whichever she preferred. We next heard from the family that this young girl would like to deliver some cat toys she had made for our shelter felines. This past Sunday afternoon she came through our doors with a gift bag filled with catnip toys she had designed and created. We were so impressed with this young lady and her dedication to our cause that we asked if we could feature her on our website. Ashley is but one of many volunteers we have come to rely on daily. Thank you, Ashley. This is the note Ashley wrote to accompany her gift: "Cats are my favorite animal and I love and respect them. So I feel that since I am not old enough to volunteer, I will do my part in helping these animals by contributing these cat toys for the cats! With the help of my mom, I sewed catnip filled toys for them. Enjoy!! Love, Ashley" |
