      MADDY

Hello CHS,
We adopted 10 y/o Maddy this past August.  Having never adopted an elderly dog before we had concerns of what issues may arise after she moved into her new home.  You folks were right on with knowing this girl's character; we had no surprises.  She has been a great fit with our family and lifestyle!
She has been with us now for about 2.5 months and we have found that she is more hound than anything due to the fact that she highly dislikes being in the water (although, loves boat rides) and has absolutely no interest in retrieving!  She keeps her head to the ground sniffin' in what ever brush she can find!  After a few weeks, her first hound howl came out!  Of course, there were a few initial indoor accidents.  We have since learned her cues and she has learned our routines as well.  Maddy had an excellent vet check 3-4wks after adoption.
I have highly recommended your facility to coworkers and friends.  My experience with your staff was warm and friendly.  Some people have asked, "why adopt a 10 y/o dog when it's just gonna, ya-know, 'go' soon"?  My response is: "It doesn't matter, she's already made a lasting impression on our hearts".  Thank you Coastal Humane Society!!

      HARRY

Hello,
We adopted Harry from CHS in October of 2002. He was well known at the shelter at the time due to my kind disposition and well manners. He has been a true blessing to our family. He is such a kind, loving dog and very loyal to the family. He has welcomed a cat (also adopted from CHS, named Xander but we changed to Harley) as well as a rescued retired Greyhound into the family since he joined. We are not sure of his actual age (told he was between 5-6 years when we adopted him) but this month it has been 7 years that he has been with our family. Sure, age is starting to catch up with him but he does not let it stop him. He loves to play and run with the kids as well as his fellow canine friend. Our family recently moved from Maine to Florida and he is loving it. He loves to lay out in the backyard and soak up all the sunshine. Thank you so much for letting us adopt him and share our lives with him. He is such a great dog.We have attached a photo of him lounging in the living room.  Sincerely, The Love Family

Rocky (formerly Rocco)

Hello Coastal Humane Society,

Kurt and I adopted Rocky almost 2 months ago now. Rocky has been a welcome addition to our home. We have an older cat who doesn't love most dogs, but they get along just fine. Occasionally she will give him a swipe if he gets too close, but other than that, he doesn't mind her much at all. Rocky has a very sweet and calm demeanor, he listens well, and my husband Kurt has worked with him a lot. They've added a few new tricks to Rocky's repertoire already. Among his favorite toys is a yellow ball, which he just loves. He would chase it all day if you would throw it that long. He starts his days off playing in the yard with Kurt and the yellow ball, and going for a walk up the road. Rocky also loves to snuggle on the couch, and get his back scratched. He is a very loveable animal.
This is our first pittbull, and we've learned a lot so far about people's thoughts and stereotypes about the breed. Rocco (we call him Rocco now, it just stuck) has been such a great dog so far. He listens so well, and he learns quick. CHS did a wonderful job testing him for aggression and misbehaviors, which he really has none. He's great with kids and people and other animals. At first we had some reservations but we stuck with him, and are so glad we did. He is a great dog! Anyone who spends any length of time around him can see how good he is. CHS's encouragement and faith in this animal meant a lot to us. We thank them very much, Robin especially. Everyone there who dealt with him seemed to be very fond of him. He's doing great, we think he's quite happy here, and we are very glad we found him. Thanks so much! Angie and Kurt Arsenault

"Princess Kika"

The Princess ruling her kingdom

I just wanted to send a very belated update on the princess of the house whom I adopted form CHS in 2006.  She was Joanna or some similar normal name when I picked her up, but she quickly became "Princess Kika".   She has ruled the roost from day one and is an amazing snugglebug.  We sometimes disagree on the proper use for a computer keyboard, but warm fur wins over electronics every time.  In summer she follows me around the garden or yard when I'm puttering.  Sometimes she'll even ride on my shoulders if I don't bounce too much.  And in winter she's a velcro cat, glued to myself or my housemates purring up a storm.  She is an awesome part of my life, and some day I"m sure I"ll be back for another fur-baby to keep her company.

I appreciate the work you do at CHS and hope that these fun pictures will encourage others to take home a furry friend.

Thanks for doing what you do!

GUS

Dear Coastal Humane,

I am writing with an update on Gus. We adopted this wonderful old dog last September. He's an Australian Cattle Dog, also known as a Blue Heeler. (There are Red Heelers as well — they are more brown while the blues are have more grey and silver.) He's in good health for a 13-year-old.  He has an interesting personality — very different from our two Golden Retrievers, Tanner and Olivia. Gus is single-minded, stubborn, tenacious, and incredibly smart. He tries to herd anything that moves — including the vacuum cleaner. He has a very loud bark, which might be helpful when you're trying to round up your cows, but is deafening in the car! He's a mastermind trash thief. And he's like a small tank. He plows through anything or anybody in his way. He and Tanner are good friends. He and Olivia have a truce. And he's totally devoted to my husband, Chris. Gus comes to work with us just about every day. He thinks he's extremely handsome. He admires himself in the elevator mirror every time we take him out for a walk. People out on the streets stop to pet him or to tell us their stories about ACDs. We didn't know anything about this breed until we got Gus. Thank you for helping us adopt a truly great dog and very loyal friend.

Gus with his favorite pink ball. Chris discovered by accident that Gus has a trick. When Chris tosses this ball to Gus, Gus bounces it off his nose back to Chris!

Gus is even more of a chow hound than the two Goldens. I didn't think that was possible.

Gus in Chris's office in Portland. Gus enjoys water views and an outdoor deck. As you can see, his spot is furnished with a cattle-pattern bed, nice flowering plants and a framed photo of his friend Tanner.

I don't know if he was on boats before, or if it's just his need to go where Chris goes, but Gus is great on the boat.

Waiting for the word to come on board

Gus and Tanner are handsome in their life jackets

Gus likes the comfy cabin the best

The vision of a happy Blue Heeler!

He's a sweetheart. He's lucky he came to us. When we took him for his first vet checkup we had a visiting vet, Dr. Noyce, She lives in Puerto Rico and only works part time atAndroscoggin Animal Hospital when she's visiting Maine. Unlike most vets, she does an anal check as part of her full exam (because she lost a dog to rectal cancer). She found a lump in Gus's anal sac and it did turn out to be malignant. They caught it early, though, and Dr. Friedman did the surgery to remove it. Subsequent checkups are all negative. Dr. Noyce and Dr. Friedman really saved his life.

Chris keeps saying he would like to get a cattle dog puppy. I just can't imagine what that would be like. Gus is a handful, even at 13. He pushes things out of his way to get to the trash, he barks at anyone passing our car. He sometimes decides that using the concrete in the garage as a toilet is more convenient than going out the dog door. And he sheds like crazy.

We threaten to bring him back to CHS, but he knows we never would. We love him a LOT. And I think he's very happy to be with us.

Lucky

Dear CHS,

Devotion, quiet dignity, grace and affection, loyal, steadfast friend; these are all words to describe our dear Lucky Fish (Mikey while at CHS) who passed from our physical world on May 16, 2009.

When my husband, Stan, and I met him at CHS in December, 2006, we felt sure that he was the right fellow to join our furry Fish Family (of CHS alums).  We were looking for an older dog whose energy level might more closely match our own.  Lucky had come into CHS as a very ill stray and you, at CHS, quesstimated that his age was about 10 years old.  We brought him home on December 22nd, 2006 and he just fit right in, immediately.  He attached himself to Stan and just wanted to be wherever he was 24/7.  Lucky and I (Ginni) would walk two to three miles a day.  He loved those walks and they appeared to help his arthritis and gave him more flexibility and limberness.  He was soooo easy to love and we really hoped that we might have five good years with him.  Alas, that was not to be...

...This past winter he began to decline dramatically.  Getting up and down and walking became increasingly difficult for him, and those wonderful walks quickly got shorter and shorter.  His spirit was excited to go but his body would not comply.  And this past Saturday, he could barely function and we knew that it was time for him to move on in his journey.  In his last moments, we kissed and hugged him and told him that we hoped for him to come home with us in spirit.  And, yesterday--Sunday--we certainly could feel him around.  We know that he will move on but our love for him and our memories of him will remain in our hearts, always.

Thank you, CHS, for all of the good care and love that you all gave him which enabled him to get well and then join our family.  We feel privileged to have shared love and life with him, and we believe that he had a pretty good time while here.  May the Great Spirit bless you all for the wonderful work that you do for all of the animals who are fortunate enough to reach your door.

    Ginni and Stan Fish
